Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly making its way into all areas of corporate life, including the field of safety. Its development is generating high expectations, concerns, and questions regarding its deployment, governance, and organizational impact.

This document presents an overview of the opportunities and concerns associated with AI deployment through a graphical representation of six application domains, depicted as the petals of a flower: 

• anticipating risk ;
• distancing operators from the most hazardous situations ;
• protecting exposed operators ;
• enhancing human knowledge and decision-making ;
• automating the monitoring and maintenance of technical systems ;
• and, finally, enriching experience feedback.

This “Cahier” was written by René Amalberti, Foncsi’s director, as a synthesis of a foresight workshop organized by Foncsi on Safety for the future, held in Paris on April 2, 2026.

The April 2, 2026 Foresight Workshop

As part of the Foncsi initiative Safety of the Future: “Living with” Uncertainty, Complexity, and New Expectations, this document draws on the academic and technical literature as well as on the work and discussions of the second foresight workshop of Foncsi’s “Living with” group.

This group, composed of around twenty experts from companies and regulatory authorities, together with external contributors, met in Paris on April 2, 2026, to discuss: AI applications in organizations: what are the associated positive and negative safety challenges?

During the workshop, participants worked in small groups to identify how AI is beginning to be deployed within their organizations. They then proposed risk evolution curves associated with the introduction of AI, drawing inspiration from the evolution curves of other well-known technologies.
