In 2024, the Foundation launched its strategic analysis on “Safety practices and the digital transition”, beginning with an extensive literature review that led to the publication of the Industrial Safety “Cahier” (Notebook): Artificial intelligence and safety management An overview of key challenges.

An overview of key challenges

This publication provided the members of the strategic analysis group with a broad overview of the topic and helped them identify the issues currently faced by industrial organisations responsible for safety. It also enabled them to determine which international experts to invite to the academic seminar, with the aim of fostering exchanges and debate that will ultimately advance and enrich the overall reflection.

Nine international experts on digital transition and safety

During the seminar, nine experts presented their work:

  • David Woods, Ohio State University (USA)
  • Jasper van der Waa, TNO (Netherlands)
  • Carl Macrae, Nottingham University Business School (United Kingdom)
  • Roel Dobbe, TU Delft (Netherlands)
  • Myriam Fréjus, EDF R&D (France)
  • Hila Lifshitz, Warwick Business School (United Kingdom)
  • Winston Maxwell, Télécom Paris (France)
  • Mélanie Gornet, AI Office / European Commission  (France)
  • Elsa Gisquet, ASNR (France)

They discussed their research and were challenged by the members of the scientific strategic analysis group and by the Foncsi team:

  • Nicolás Canales, ASNR (former IRSN)
  • Julien Boucault, EPSF
  • Dounia Lahoual & Ranya Bennani, EDF
  • Véronique Steyer, Ecole polytechnique
  • Eric Marsden, Foncsi
  • Corinne Bieder, Foncsi
  • Jean Pariès, Foncsi

Next steps

In the coming months, the members of the strategic analysis group will continue their discussions and further develop their reflections in order to transfer the results to industry, notably during a dedicated seminar to be held at the end of the first quarter of 2026.

The international experts will write the scientific chapters that will form the book to be published by Springer in the Foncsi series “SpringerBriefs in Safety Management”.
